 Much has been written about the poor quality of primary and secondary education in Indian government schools. Researchers have found that 25% of teachers in government schools are absent and only half of those who are present teach. Perhaps due to the lack of value of going to a school system which does provide limited teaching, and due to alternative uses of time, over 40% of India’s 361 million children remain out of school; and 46% of eligible children drop out before middle school.

Biomass combustion using traditional cookstoves is thought to be the main contributor to indoor air pollution, a principal culprit of acute respiratory infections in children worldwide.  Black carbon emission from traditional cook-stoves is an important contributor to climate change as well.  Despite these hazards, half of the world’s population continues to rely on traditional biomass-burning stoves for cooking. It’s clear why shoppers like store brands. Private labels are cheaper than their name brand counterparts, and in categories where the store brand and name brand are virtually identical, buying private label is a way to save pennies without sacrificing too much. And during these recessionary times, those pennies are worth a lot to many consumers.

New Haven, Conn., December 3, 2009 — Maps depict northern locations to be above southern locations, and our speech commonly describes north to be above south (e.g., "up north" and "down south"). According to a study published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Marketing Research, the well-learned association between vertical position and cardinal direction leads people to erroneously infer that northern locations are physically above southern locations, which in turn shapes consumers’ judgments and choices.
